The CHARTER project understands heritage to be a cultural phenomenon considering it a dynamic of people, place and participation. This understanding is informed by the Faro Convention (2005). Concentrating on heritage per se as opposed to the facticity of heritage, CHARTER states that this broadened view of heritage results in activities and occupations that move beyond traditional roles that are perceived to be heritage professions and which now require complex core and transversal professional competences to be recognised and resourced. This presentation looks at the work of CHARTER and what it means for the profession of the conservator-restorer.
